Leah Doane, Ph.D.

Principal Investigator

Leah Doane is a developmental psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University. She is also currently Associate Chair and Director of Faculty Success in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Doane received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Cornell University and her Masters and Ph.D. in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University. She also completed a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Chicago in Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience. Dr. Doane investigates the physiological mechanisms underlying developmental psychopathology and everyday stressful experiences in childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. She has training in human development and developmental psychophysiology with expertise in collecting, measuring and modeling physiological markers of stress in both lab and naturalistic settings including measures of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis activity and objective sleep.

Through numerous collaborations, Dr. Doane also incorporates culturally- and genetically-informed designs for studying daily associations among socio-emotional experiences, physiology and sleep in the prediction of subsequent health and academic achievement. Further, much of her of research focuses on these processes in Latinx youth and families. Dr. Doane was a William T. Grant Foundation Scholar and was funded by the foundation, as well as the Helios Education Foundation, for her work examining cultural influences on the Latinx transition to college. She is also supported by the National Institutes for Health (NICHD) for a study examining the social and genetic contributions to children’s sleep, health and academic success. Finally, she currently serves as co-PI on an Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) grant on cultural identities.

Current Team

Ace Richmond

lab coordinator

As the lab coordinator for the ASAE Lab, Ace oversees research activities for the LivesMix Study and overall ASAE Lab. She loves being able to facilitate the lab’s research and supporting undergraduate Research Assistants (RA's) in their academic journeys. She is interested in behavioral neuroscience and exploring the interactions between stress, psychopathology, social relationships, and communities.

Emma Lecarie

graduate student

After spending two years working at the Yale Child Study Center, Emma became increasingly interested in developmental transitions for children and adolescents. She is excited to be working as a research assistant on the Arizona Twin Project to examine genetic and environmental influences on sleep, physiology, and chronic pain during childhood. She is specifically interested in the manifestation of stress and internalizing symptoms and how the environment, especially family dynamics, has an effect on development.

Personal Interests

  • Staying active outdoors

  • Frequenting coffee shops

  • Solving puzzles

Skyler Mendes

graduate student

Skye is co-mentored by Dr. Leah Doane and Dr. Sabrina Oesterle (Director of the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center and faculty in the School of Social Work). Skye’s research focus is the prevention of internalizing disorders (e.g., anxiety and depression) in youth. She examines risk and protective factors and their implications in preventative interventions and positive youth development programs. Skye has secondary interests in the science of teaching and learning (SoTL) and inclusive pedagogy. Ideally, her future endeavors will allow opportunities for teaching as well as leveraging prevention science to promote healthy social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes for youth.

Mickie Gusman

graduate student

Mickie is broadly interested in understanding the mechanisms through which childhood adversity affect emotion development throughout the lifespan. In her research, she hopes to use experimental methodology to examine the intersection of culture and resilience through the lens of physiological markers (i.e., how familial narratives, religious beliefs/customs, and community supports contribute to individual differences in stress reactivity). After her doctoral studies, she aims to extend this line of research toward informing community-based, culturally-responsive interventions for vulnerable youth populations.

Personal Interests

  • Live music

  • Staying active with yoga

  • Engaging in the occasional obscure recreational sport tournament

Karen Aguilar

graduate student

Karen is co-mentored by Dr. Leah Doane and Dr. Rick Cruz (REACH and assistant professor in the Department of Psychology). Karen is broadly interested in the intersection of sleep, stress, and mental health in Latinx and underserved populations through the lens of culture identity and life transitions. She is also interested in the role that systems and family dynamics have on the well-being and academic success of children/adolescents. After her doctoral studies, Karen would like to continue her research through teaching and interventions in community and academia settings.

Christy Bui

graduate student

Christy is a graduate student in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program. Christy is broadly interested in understanding how early environmental experiences confer risk for the development of psychopathology. She is also interested in how stress and sleep during key developmental transitions impact on health and socioemotional outcomes.
